Here is an overview of the issue:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Key: GUI-11
Summary: Magnet Link Input/Output
Type: New Feature

Status: Open
Priority: Major

Project: gui

Assignee: Sam Berlin
Reporter: Angel Leon

Created: Thu, 17 Mar 2005 4:17 PM
Updated: Thu, 17 Mar 2005 4:17 PM
Environment: All

Description:
In Linux when I click on a magnet link on Firefox, I get an errore message saying the protocol has not been registered.

This happens a lot with edonkey links, magnet links, in Windows, Linux, etc. Users have no clue what's going on, making the links innefective.

You should have an alternate way of using the magnet links, like a text field where you paste the magnet link, and it automatically adds the download to your queue.
--
Also, you should be able to right click on a file from your library, and have an option like "Send magnet link to clipboard", or "Create a Magnet Link for this file", and then a popup window with a Text field opens up, with the Magnet link already selected for you to Copy (put a copy to clipboard button there too).

This way, webmasters can add a lot of content to the network, and start using the network not only to share music and videos, but to save bandwidth on their sites. Maybe this is some feature on the Pro version I don't know of, but it'd be very useful, plus it would give a great deal of publicity to Limewire, since everybody would be using magnet links on their sites.

----
In linux, magnet links are read from the clipboard - check
http://gnutellaforums.com/showthread.php?threadid=25570
for details.

----
There is a menu option called "magnet details for file" which does something very similar.
