Here is an overview of the issue:
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Key: GUI-16
Summary: Auto-Resume
Type: Improvement

Status: Open
Priority: Minor

Project: gui
Versions:
4.8.1

Assignee: Sam Berlin
Reporter: Angel Leon

Created: Mon, 21 Mar 2005 9:09 AM
Updated: Mon, 21 Mar 2005 9:09 AM
Environment: 4.8.1 Basic (Linux)

Description:
I don't know if it already does it, but it doesnt seem to be doing it on my limewire, maybe this is a PRO version feature.

It'd be cool to configure, autoresume after N minutes of inactivity on a download., or "Auto Force Resume"

I requested this YEARS ago but was told that it would create too much extra traffic. Maybe the developers will feel differently now?

Actually, doesn't LW maintain a list of IPs for each in-process download? If so, then a timed auto-resume would only affect the IP sharing that file, i.e., it would do a 'Resume' rather than a systemwide 'Find New Sources'. There would still be a concern about swamping someone sharing a popular file but doesn't the "Partial Download" code do a bittorrent-like referral to others who have recently downloaded that file?

Also, is there some way to view the IP(s) at which LW has previously 'seen' a particular file?

So, if I manually pressing "find more sources" every minute - it will not generate extra traffic, but if I enable auto-search every 10 munutes and will going to sleep - it will generate extra traffic, yes? :-) Sure, here must be an option.

Very bad when I leave my PC work all night, and at morning doesn't get some content downloaded, while person who shared needed file was appeared for some time. And if I not sleep and repeat search - downloading may continue.

The last comment is the main reason for this.
Many times you leave the pc on all night, when you wake up in the morning, nothing downloaded.

I guess it wont generate more traffic, since you'll be able to finally download the file, instead of requesting manual searches.

This way, when the other person gets online, you'll get to download from him/them, and you'll be able to share more

This should definetly be an option. Specially for big downloads

WinMX, and some eMule clients have it, it shouldn't be a big deal to add a timer to activate every N minutes on the event of inactivity (only for those files that you want, that way you just create traffic for files that really need it, not for every download you make)

A good workaound could be a new feature for Limewire.

Look at MLDonkey's web interface.

Have something very similar to this but simpler for a first version.

I suggest if possible to use some of the core features to build a simple web interface that:
-> Is password protected if accesed from an ip address != 127.0.0.1
or from a list of trusted ip addresses (which is probably not very good, but mldonkey does it that way if I'm not mistaken)
-> Allows you to see the status of your downloads. So If you see a download that you really crave to have, but since no auto-resume will be built, then you can remotely tell Limewire to look for more sources
-> Allows you to kill download

Features after first release:
-> Search
-> Control all the options, download/upload bandwidths
-> See current uploads, be able to kill them
-> Stats

I think its very feasible, you just have to build a web interface to access existing functionality. No need to build a remote client with RMI, or Corba, or SOAP or anything like that... just a web interface that invokes methods on the current instance that runs on your home pc.

This would totally kick a$$.

Here's a way to force LimeWire to find sources periodically :)

1 - Download MacroMagic or a similar program.
2 - Record a keyboard and mouse macro that does the following:

[Before starting, Maximise the LimeWire screen.]
[Before starting, Sort the "Status" column descending.]

a) Click the "Search" tab.
b) Click on any download
c) Press the 'up' arrow 10 times. (makes sure we start at the top of the list)
d) Click the "Find Sources" or "Resume" button
e) Click the first download again.
f) Press the Down arrow once
g) Click the "Find Sources" or "Resume" button again.
h) go back to e) and add one down arrow to f) for as many files as you want it to auto resume.
i) schedule your macro using windows' task scheduler, or wincron.exe

Note: not actually tested! (Yet) It may also not achieve anything if you have a stack of queued downloads since they will be before the "Need more sources" ones. YMMV :)
